Here I would like to share one of my pieces called ‘Jing.’

This was composed in 2010, quite challenged piece, and I worked together with the percussionist ‘Mei-Yi Lee.’

Everything was written on score (sample below) and the live electronics was done with SuperCollider.

The recording was made with two microphones, (Thanks to Kassen and Rob) and it was very challenging due to the characteristics of the instruments and how the composition itself was aimed. More specifically, the range of the dynamic goes from Zero to .. I don’t know.. easily up to 120 db. I was having a hard time when I was right beside the instrument in order not to change my facial expression because it was just really really loud.

We needed to record several times because of this, avoiding clipping, and very small editing was involved because of the soft parts.

Of course live music should be heard in live for sure. But it was a happy moment when we finally managed to finish this recording, and now I can share with many more people.

Oh, by the way, Jing is a Korean percussion that is used in many other occasions especially in rituals. It has both a very gentle warm, embracing base sound to very hard crazy complex noise. So that I wanted to show all the character, and the percussionist is shown as he/she is communicating and triggering it. So in the piece, Jing is answering, expressing, angry, and so on. It has its own personality. Electronics is used for this conversation and also help to create what moods it is going to be.

I hope anyone who reads this can enjoy the piece. Thanks!

I know that there are many SuperCollider gurus out there, so that many people could have their own ways to make their code ‘pretty.’
But I would like to share what I have done regarding ‘Removing some repetition and making it simple.’

Here is the example.

This happens quite often on GUI making. I would like to make several sliders:

/////////////////////Sliders///////////////////////////////
slider1 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "conVar", cs.conVar,
{ |slider| if (b.notNil)
{ b.set(\conVar, slider.value) } });
slider2 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "LPF", buf1cs.lpf,
{ |slider| if (~buff1.notNil)
{ ~buff1.set(\freq, slider.value) } });
slider3 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "amp1", buf1cs.amp,
{ |slider| if (~buff1.notNil)
{ ~buff1.set(\amp, slider.value) } });
slider4 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "amp2", buf2cs.amp,
{ |slider| if (~buff2.notNil)
{ ~buff2.set(\amp, slider.value) } });
slider5 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "amp3", buf3cs.amp,
{ |slider| if (~buff3.notNil)
{ ~buff3.set(\amp, slider.value) } });
slider6 = EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, "amp4", buf4cs.amp,
{ |slider| if (~buff4.notNil)
{ ~buff4.set(\amp, slider.value) } });

Here, there are many parameters that are repeated, and many are different.

So that I bound the same things together, and make arrays for the differences.

/////////////////////Sliders///////////////////////////////
slider = Array.new(6);
sliderItem=["conVar","LPF","amp1","amp2","amp3","amp4"];
sliderCs = [cs.conVar,buf1cs.lpf,buf1cs.amp,buf2cs.amp,buf3cs.amp,buf4cs.amp];
synthVar = [b, ~buff1, ~buff1, ~buff2, ~buff3, ~buff4];
sliderAction = [\conVar,\freq,\amp,\amp,\amp,\amp];
sliderItem.do({
arg item, i;
slider.add('item'++i);
slider[i]=EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, item, sliderCs[i],
{ |slid|
if (synthVar[i].notNil)
{ synthVar[i].set(sliderAction[i], slid.value) }
});
});

One might argue that the number of lines are not so different. But thinking of creating 20 different sliders, then definitely, the line of the later example will stays the same. This will save quite amount of codes, at the same time it is more convenient when one needs to fix and add a part of the code.

More specific explanations here:

I make an array for 6 sliders without giving names to each slider, but just creating a space for each.

slider = Array.new(6);

Here are the different paramaters like the name of arguments and control specs, and synthname for each slider.

sliderItem=["conVar","LPF","amp1","amp2","amp3","amp4"];
sliderCs = [cs.conVar,buf1cs.lpf,buf1cs.amp,buf2cs.amp,buf3cs.amp,buf4cs.amp];
synthVar = [b, ~buff1, ~buff1, ~buff2, ~buff3, ~buff4];
sliderAction = [\conVar,\freq,\amp,\amp,\amp,\amp];

Here I use ‘do’ . The argument ‘item’ will be ‘slideritem’ in order, and ‘i’ will simply count the number of the items.

sliderItem.do({
arg item, i;
slider.add('item'++i);
slider[i]=EZSlider(w, 350 @ 20, item, sliderCs[i],
{ |slid|
if (synthVar[i].notNil)
{ synthVar[i].set(sliderAction[i], slid.value) }
});
});

I have given names to the slider by doing

slider.add('item'++i);

The reason is to connect with midi controller :
For instance,

ccNum = [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8];//this is the number of midi fader on midi controllder
CCResponder({ |port, chan, num, val|
ccNum.do({
arg item, i;
if (num ==item.value)
{ {slider[i].value = slider[i].controlSpec.map(val/127.0)}.defer;
slider[i].doAction}; // defer makes it move
});
});

I am still quite new to Linux in general. I am learning a lot by just trying to use it, and trying not to move back to OSX just to do a simple task. So that this post might be for a person like me, who has struggled a lot on this ‘new’ way of patching sound in and out and configuring in a right way.
I have used Jack before in OSX when I was trying to do a virtual multichannel test, but there was a graphical interface, not at all complicated. There is also ‘system preference’ that OSX offers. When I change the soundcards, or using different inputs/outputs, I didn’t need to do much. But here, it might be a simple thing, but I was in panic.
So that I would like to share my experience if this can help anyone who is like me.

I have two different versions of linux that I am using in different laptop. 11.04/11.10.

Here I am focusing on 11.04, because 11.10 had less issues.

Jack versions and library installed : jackd, libjack-jackd2-dev, jackd2-firewire, jackd2, libjack-jack2-0, libasound2-plugins

First of all, I was at the first moment trying to use ‘qjackctl‘ that offers graphical user interface. But weiredly, the value that I have changed was not applied to the result.

Screenshot of qjackctl setup window

The default sample rate was set to 48000, and I wanted to change it into 44100. Even though I was doing it, it didn’t change.

Asking some people around, I found that pulsa audio can be the cause of issue, so I removed it and tried to use only ‘alsa.’

Jack setup

When I run scvim, I use a bash script in order to reduce any possible complications such as already-running-sclang. I saved it as ‘iscvim’ and fixed chmod to an exacutable, and put it into a path (i.g. /usr/local/bin.).

Here I include jack setup as well.

#!/bin/bash
cd ~
killall jackd
killall sclang
killall scsynth
killall scvim
killall sclangpipe_app
jackd -t 500 -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 44100 -p 1024 -s -S &
sleep 1
scvim

Here I set to use alsa as the driver, and device as hw:0, sample rate: 44100, period 1024, softmode and the last of -S is to cofigure card for 16bit. This configuration can differ from soundcard. I tried to use 32 bit, but my sound card only supports 32 bit-float. But this created problem with sc3, (creating distortion) and I assume that this is because of -float- (it could be supposed to be integer).

Check something like this when you run jack,

ALSA: final selected sample format for capture: 32bit float little-endian

or

ALSA: final selected sample format for capture: 16bit little-endian

In order to know what card you have;

cat /proc/asound/cards

In order to know what other configuration will be possible with your soundcard, use ‘jack_control,’ which shows you all possible options for your setup, and not difficult to use.

For Realtime Scheduling

This is followed by what ‘jack’ website suggests, and it works very well. (http://jackaudio.org/linux_rt_config)

Open /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf

Then fix as below.

# Provided by the jackd package.

#
# Changes to this file will be preserved.
#
# If you want to enable/disable realtime permissions, run
#
# dpkg-reconfigure -p high jackd
@audio - rtprio 95
@audio - memlock unlimited
#@audio - nice -19

So far, no issue when I am using SCVim, and I run Jack when I need to use it. Hope this helps.

The nicest part of using vim for me is to use the window management. It gives an opportunity to work in a clean environment that windows are not floating around, no need to search for a window behind another.

The second part that I discovered is to use all the functionality on Vim. I love vim more and more everyday. At the beginning, it was too difficult to know all the shorcuts and function keys, but after some time forcing myself to use them more and more and putting some ‘postits’ with some cheat-notes on the frame of my monitor, I think it is a powerful tool.

I would like to introduce some of powerful sides of using vim for SuperColliding. (it works in both Linux and OSX)

Snippets

I use the snippet plugin that you can download from vim website. It is called ‘snipMate‘ and you can also see the screencast.

Download the zip file into ~/.vim and unzip it, then you can find ‘snippets’ folder too. There, you can create your own snippets for any language (that vim supports) you are using.

Here, since I installed scvim, I will give you an example of how this snippets work.

Create a file on ~/.vim/snippets/supercollider/example.snippet
The file name is an important element because you are going to call the snippet with the file name.
In this case, when you edit vim, you are going to write ‘example’ and then tab key.
Here I will write a SynthDef snippet since I make SynthDef a lot.

Here is the example.

(
 SynthDef("${1:synthname}",
 {
 arg ${2:arg1};
 var ${3:var1};
 $3 = ${4:write};
 Out.ar(${5:outbus},${6:output})
 }).store;
)

In this way, you created a snippet. I named it as ‘syndef’

When you call, you will see this

Because we setup the synth name as an argument by doing ${number:name}, your cursor will stop at the first argument.
After you fill up the synth name, and click ‘TAB’ button, then it will move to the second argument, in this case ‘arg1.’

The best part of this is that the name of argument becomes flexible. In this example, ‘var1′ is used in two places. If you fix one of ‘var1′ name, then the other one will follow. You don’t need to go down to the name and try to fix it!!

This is a simple example. I don’t use a lot of snippet, but some that save lots of time for me.

Auto Completion

For auto completion, I use ‘AutoComplPop‘ plugin.

If you have installed correctly, you will find those files ‘sc_object_completion’ and ‘supercollider_objects.vim.’ in ~/.scvim folder. Those files are going to be used to create auto completion.
If you don’t get it successfully, copy those two files into ~/.vim folder. Then when you type in, you will see this :

That’s quite easy!!

I am still exploring what could be useful for coding. I will post when I discover something useful. Hope you enjoy!

After 2 years of Supercollider 3.4, finally the beta version of SuperCollider 3.5 was released yesterday.

I have been compiling SC3 for a while, so that I have known what has been changed. But for the official version users, this might be fresh to experience.

The most noticeable change is the gui. (surely noticeable)

Now this gui is QT based, not cocoa based.

For instance, this is the help brower (Help.gui, or cmd+d in osx)

I personally dislike the white background, but now it can be fixed by correcting css file. This might be very comfortable for a user to search for their need. Especially when searching for a UGen, it also gives you all class definition and examples below, of course together with the description(explanation) of the Ugen itself.

Another nice part of the help browser is the auto-completion. When you type something on the search window, it will show the result of what you are typing in. It might be an easier for a person like me who forgets the name of the ugen or class name very often.

The startup file on ~/Library/Application Support/SuperCollider/ should be changed to ‘startup.scd’ if you have ‘startup.rtf’ file.

I don’t remember by heart what important changes are there for now.

After I use this beta version for a while, I will update the post.

Oh, this is the download links and comment from the mailing list.

if you find a bug, please report to the mailing lists and/or file a bug report
at https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=54622. the better the description
and the easier it is to fix the bug, so providing a simple reproducer or a
minimal test case will help a lot.

My last project of the last year was to get ready as a linux user. All my setup in OSX was targeting toward ‘getting used to using terminal,’ and after all, I couldn’t wait to move to Linux.

Yeah. I have only Apple computers (PowerPC, MBP 4,1, MBP 8,1) , and after a long time as a Apple user, I feel very much tired of how the apple system becomes ‘closed.’

I know a lot of people might argue about this, but I would like to be able to configure my own environment that follows users’ preference, not something that a system offers for the users to fit into.

I though linux is perfect for that, although after some time of struggling to install, and having a scary moment that I needed to ‘open up’ my laptop, and now all my three old and new apple computers have both osx and linux!!! yay!!

Alright. so I would like to briefly talk about how I installed it, and what, and of course, everyone can find this from ubuntu forum with better detailed explanations. I deeply admire those people who give this document to everyone.

Macbook pro 4,1 -> Ubuntu 11.10

For the Macbook pro 4,1; I installed Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/11.10/release/) . Well, before I found this ‘mac’ specified version, I installed like… 5 different versions, and threw away all cds and dvds that I experimented.

So for you, this will be helpful. I downloaded ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64+mac.iso .

My CD room of the computer is broken. But i was able to install it with my usb stick. The thing is that Ubuntu forum explains how to install with USB. But somehow it was not working (failing to boot from there properly.) After a while of googling, I found this application for window. (yeah. I also have a window installed with VMware, this is just to do ‘online banking’ from Korean banks…!!)

This progam is called UFDISK. (download : http://goo.gl/UYitG)

You put your usb stick into the port, and run this. (backup all your files before) then you push ‘Auto run’ . Select your iso file, and run it. Then done!!

Then you need to install ‘ReFit’ (http://refit.sourceforge.net/)

After install, open the terminal and type

sudo sh /efi/refit/enable-always.sh

then you will see this when you boot,

you can select your usb to boot it.

Some remarks on Refit

When you first put your usb (or cd) and run REFit, you will see the login window that you can choose from where to boot. Before you choose, at the bottom part, there are some menus like shell script.. I don’t remember by heart right now, and choose the second one, and run. This will make everything suitable to boot. Then ‘shut down’ once, and then on next boot, choose your booting harddrive.

Make sure you are connected to internet (ethernet connection), and for more help, http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/10/ubuntu-1110-in-macbook-pro.html

Macbook pro 8,2 -> Ubuntu 11.04

here, I needed to have both CD, and USB in order to boot properly. Go here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/11.04/release/ download ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso

For the procedure for usb, please look up, and for burning CD, just to burn with DiskUtility on osx. (I have ‘lion’ installed)

Also you need REFit. (also look up for the explanation and download) On lion, I had a hard time for this to run. After few times of reinstalling, it was just working. I cannot explain what it was.. but it works!

Alright. Then put usb and CD together. when Refit login window, you will only see two linux install. Choose the first one, and run the install.

Make sure you check this site : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro8-1/Natty for more help and additional install.

Some remarks :

For ubuntu 11.10, I made two partitions for ubuntu, one as root(/), and one as /home. (except for swap disk) this was working fine. But on ubuntu 11.04, this was not working. (trouble on booting with Refit.) so do not make seperate partitions for your ubuntu. just make one, (again, except for swap disk)

Hope this helps. well, I had a hard time figuring out all. I might have missed some important part that I was struggling. Then I will update later on.

Now I have Ubuntu working with ‘awesome’ window manager. Good bye mouse!

**28.02.2012 updated:

If you have an issue with rEFit regarding OSX security setting, check this page. It will guide you the way.

After finishing my final concert of the year 2 weeks ago, I finally had some time to organize my computer, configure the working enviroment, renew my blog. and study many different things!

The first thing that I wanted to study is VIM in order to get used to it more and more and be comfortable when programming. My final goal will probably be to make my osx Lion into Linux. But so far there are too many issues to solve in order to do that, such as to find a nice soundcard that I can work on both systems.

Well, anyway, I was not so close to terminal for instance. Few years ago, when my friend was telling me that some of the people are checking their email on terminal, I was baffled by it. Who knew if I would do that.. So, I was digging into the possibility and found ‘Mutt.’

It took a while to configure everything. The main issue was to use both Gmail and Hotmail, and to make it possible to read RSS feed. Due to many helps in google search, anyway, I am now using it.

Another big change is to use Midnight Commander instead of Finder as the window manager.

The main issue for me on Lion was of course its usage of memory, but above all, I dislike this closed format that I cannot change anything, cannot watch the hidden files well, and without mouse, is hard to be flexible in use, and the amount of finder windows that I need to deal with.

Of course at the beginning, I was very much struggling with all shortcuts. But the best way to get used to it is to use lots and lots. and now, I feel pretty much comfortable.

In order not to use finder (turn it off), I turn on ‘Path Finder’ when I log in to my system. Path finder has an option to ‘kill’ the finder without any harm on system. Then I turn it off, and turn on iTerm2, the replacement for osx Ternimal.

The black background, together with this new blog design, is due to the condition of my eyes. According to what doctor says, I have a brighter sight than others. So that I feel tired easily. Black background feels always comfortable to me. Also, in finder this is totally impossible.

Well, then I fixed this blog. I was using ‘Textyle,’ one of the blog environments from Korea, and it was way to slow. I really wanted to change it into WordPress but didn’t want to blow away the whole posts that I have written for 10 years. Yes!! Next year will be 10 years birthday of my blog. That became a motivation, and at the same time, I found a nice converter that a Korean programmer developed. Thanks to him, here I am.

Yes. time goes by. I am quite surprised that I have been running this blog for 10 years. But quite embarrassed by the content. Since I am developing myself, as I have been aiming to share what I have and think, I would like to make more efforts on running the blog. To post nice contents, first I need to study more though.

Happy that some of the missions have done. Personally I had a difficult year; finishing my study, hit by motorbike, and trying to stay in the Netherlands, etc etc.

But this moment that I am saying good bye to the year 2011, I am sure that next year it will be very much fruitful, and I go for it.

I never knew how much people are actually enjoying my posts. But whoever reads this, Merry christmas and Happy new year!

oh, and someday, I will get back to the subject of configuring Mutt and MC.
